Feet First! Reflexology: what’s it all about?

By Dana ONeill, CST/ LMT

Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is the treatment of the whole body by addressing various points or zones on specific parts of the body. Most famously this is done on the feet, although hands and ears also qualify. By using a series of pressure techniques to stimulate different reflex points throughout the body, reflexology can be beneficial not only to specific body parts but to entire body systems.

Reflexology is one of humankind's most ancient healing techniques, evidence of it dates as far back as 2330 BCE with pictographs on Egyptian tombs as well as Chinese literature dating back roughly 5000 years. In the early 20th century the term “reflex therapy” was used by Russian physicians and in that school, physician Vladimir Behterev coined the term “reflexology”.

The concept of Zone Therapy, dividing the body into ten longitudinal zones from the tops of our heads to our hands and our feet, was further developed more recently in the United States. While having some similarities to the meridians used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, they are not exactly the same.

The practice of reflexology varies widely from culture to culture, with Asian styles giving additional focus to the lower legs, and using tools such as wooden and bamboo sticks for example.

Specifically focusing on the feet gives attention to the numerous nerve impulses that we rely on as well as giving relief to these appendages we use so often and cannot afford to take for granted.

While not exactly a massage, the experience of receiving a reflexology session can be deeply relaxing, healing, and stress relieving. Laying back on a massage table or reclining chair, the client has their feet and lower leg worked on with moderate to firm pressure, primarily addressing the soles of the feet.

Reflexology is an excellent, non-intrusive therapy for numerous health issues including arthritis, sinusitis, constipation, asthma, and anxiety. It's also a great treatment for recovering from injury as well as aches and pains.

Dana O’Neill LMT-CST will be offering reflexology in full and add-on sessions beginning in September.

Book your stress relieving session now… available Monday 9:30-3 and Fridays 1-4.
